Category: Protocol Tunneling

Description: Manages NMS Communications Layer 2 protocol tunneling configuration for STP, VTP, and CDP passthrough.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NMS-L2-PROTOCOL-TUNNEL-MIB?

NMS-L2-PROTOCOL-TUNNEL-MIB is a vendor MIB from NMS Communications for configuring Layer 2 Protocol Tunneling (L2PT), a feature that lets a switched provider network transparently pass through customer control-plane PDUs such as STP, VTP, and CDP so that geographically separate customer LANs behave as one logical LAN. It exposes per-interface configuration objects controlling which L2 protocols are tunneled across a given port. Rather than runtime performance counters, this MIB is primarily a configuration/status MIB used to monitor and manage which protocols (e.g., Spanning Tree) are being tunneled on each interface, which is important for verifying that customer topology-control traffic is not being intercepted or blocked by the provider switch. It builds on standard Bridge/Interfaces MIB conventions for interface indexing. The NMS-L2-PROTOCOL-TUNNEL-MIB MIB is deployed in metro Ethernet or provider-edge switches offering transparent LAN services to enterprise customers.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-L2-PROTOCOL-TUNNEL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • nms Co., Ltd. Layer 2 / metro Ethernet switch (L2 protocol tunneling, vendor unidentified)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll l2ptIntfTable/l2ptIntfEntry indexed by interface to check the l2ptIntfStpTnl setting and confirm STP tunneling is enabled on a customer-facing port. If a customer reports its spanning tree topology is broken across sites, checking l2ptIntfStpTnl for an unexpectedly disabled state would reveal the tunnel is not passing BPDUs. The l2ptGlobal object would be checked to confirm the feature is globally enabled on the switch before troubleshooting individual ports.

What Can Be Monitored

  • STP tunneling status per interface
  • L2 protocol tunnel configuration
  • global L2PT enable state
