What Is MGMD-STD-MIB?

MGMD-STD-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track module (updating RFC 2933/RFC 3019) that unifies management of Multicast Group Membership Discovery protocols, covering both IGMP for IPv4 and MLD for IPv6, including their v2/v3 source-filtering extensions, and because the MGMD-STD-MIB MIB consolidates what were previously separate IGMP- and MLD-specific modules, vendors need only implement one standards-track module to cover both protocol families. It exposes per-interface multicast configuration and state, split into host-side objects (querier presence, querier version, query timers, robustness) and router-side interface objects tracking multicast group membership. As a protocol-state MIB it is used mainly for operational/configuration monitoring rather than hardware health, letting an operator confirm interface status, which IGMP/MLD version is active, and how a device is behaving as a querier versus non-querier. It has no dependency on proprietary MIBs but is closely tied to the underlying IGMP/MLD RFCs it consolidates and to related IETF multicast-routing MIBs. It is typically deployed on IP routers and multicast-aware Layer 3 switches across any vendor to verify correct multicast membership discovery behavior on each interface.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MGMD-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mgmdHostInterfaceTable/mgmdHostInterfaceEntry, checking mgmdHostInterfaceQuerierType and mgmdHostInterfaceQuerier to confirm which device on a LAN segment is the active IGMP/MLD querier, and mgmdHostInterfaceVersion to verify all hosts are running the expected protocol version. Anomalies surfaced via mgmdHostInterfaceVersion1QuerierTimer/mgmdHostInterfaceVersion2QuerierTimer can reveal a misconfigured device disrupting multicast delivery. mgmdRouterInterfaceTable would similarly be polled on the router side to confirm the interface is correctly tracking downstream multicast group membership.
