Category: Device Management, Domain: WAN

Description: Modem Device Management MIB defining SNMP objects for monitoring and controlling dial-up modem status, connections, and statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MDM-MIB?

MDM-MIB is a Modem Device Management SNMP MIB, under an enterprise tree suggesting a US Robotics/3Com network access server (NAS) product family, defining objects for monitoring and controlling dial-up modem hardware, its connections, and call statistics within a modem pool. It exposes a modem identity table (mdmIDTable) with hardware serial number and hardware revision, plus separate firmware revision fields for the supervisor, data-pump, and I/O-processor subsystems, alongside a line-information table (mdmLiTable) covering per-line/per-call connection details. It is explicitly used for hardware and software status monitoring of each modem in a pool: mdmIDHardwareSerNum/mdmIDHardwareRev identify the physical unit, while mdmIDSupervisorSwRev, mdmIDDataPumpSwRev, and mdmIDIoProcessorSwRev report the firmware version running on each of the modem's three main subsystems, letting an operator confirm consistent firmware levels across a modem bank or spot an outdated unit. The enterprise path suggests it belongs to a vendor NAS product family rather than an IETF-standard MIB, and it would typically be polled alongside standard MIB-II interface objects for the NAS chassis. It is deployed on dial-up remote-access servers/modem racks used by ISPs or enterprises for dial-in connectivity. Engineers can download the MDM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MDM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dial-up modem / network access server (NAS) modem pool device

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk mdmIDTable/mdmIDEntry by mdmIDIndex to read mdmIDModel, mdmIDHardwareSerNum, and mdmIDHardwareRev for every modem in a rack, then check mdmIDSupervisorSwRev/mdmIDDataPumpSwRev/mdmIDIoProcessorSwRev to confirm all modems are running the same firmware set after a bulk upgrade. mdmIDCountry indicates the regulatory/dialing profile configured on each unit, useful for detecting a modem misconfigured for the wrong country's telephone network, and mdmLiTable would be checked for per-line call/connection status.

What Can Be Monitored

  • modem hardware serial number and revision
  • supervisor/data-pump/IO-processor firmware revision
  • modem model and country/regulatory profile
  • per-line connection status
