Category: FDDI and Token Ring, Technology: Token Ring

Description: Madge Networks MIB providing system and interface management objects for Madge Token Ring hubs and concentrators.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MADGEBOX-MIB?

MADGEBOX-MIB is a vendor MIB from Madge Networks covering their Token Ring hub and concentrator product line ("Madgebox"), a family of Token Ring LAN infrastructure devices common in enterprise networks in the 1990s. It exposes system-level and per-interface (per Token Ring port) management objects for the chassis, letting management stations identify installed modules and track ring port state. As a hardware-monitoring MIB for LAN concentrators, it would typically be used to check overall device/system status, individual ring port up/down and insertion state, and error conditions such as ring beaconing or wiring faults on ports. It layers on top of the standard IETF Token Ring interface MIB and the generic interfaces MIB, since Madge hubs implemented both standard and proprietary Token Ring management objects. It was deployed in enterprise wiring closets running legacy Token Ring LANs, where administrators used SNMP to detect port faults and ring topology problems. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the MADGEBOX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MADGEBOX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Madge Networks Token Ring hub/concentrator

Monitoring Examples

No object names were captured for this legacy module, so specific OIDs cannot be cited; based on the short description, an admin would typically poll per-port ring insertion/beacon state on the Madgebox concentrator to detect a station causing ring disruption.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ring port insertion status
  • port up/down state
  • ring beaconing/fault conditions
  • chassis module inventory
