Description: Sun Microsystems Sun Management Center MIB providing simplified MIB-II kernel statistics reading for system performance monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is KERNEL-READER-SIMPLE-MIB2?

KERNEL-READER-SIMPLE-MIB2 is part of Sun Microsystems' Sun Management Center (SunMC) agent suite, providing a simplified read-out of Solaris kernel statistics analogous to classic "MIB-II" style system load and CPU accounting. It exposes system load averages and detailed per-CPU utilization breakdowns. This is squarely a software/hardware performance-monitoring MIB: it reports system load (avg1min, avg5min, avg15min) and, via cpuUtilTable, per-CPU-instance breakdowns of idle, user, kernel, and I/O-wait time, letting an administrator directly assess CPU load and health of a Solaris host. It is a Sun-proprietary companion to the standard MIB-II (RFC 1213) host resource conventions, reading kernel statistics that MIB-II itself does not expose at this granularity. Typical deployment is on Sun/Solaris servers running the Sun Management Center (sunsymon) monitoring agent for system performance monitoring in enterprise data centers, where KERNEL-READER-SIMPLE-MIB2 SNMP monitoring gives administrators a lightweight view of CPU load without needing full SunMC console access.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in KERNEL-READER-SIMPLE-MIB2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sun Microsystems Solaris servers running Sun Management Center (SunMC) agent

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll avg1min, avg5min, and avg15min to track overall system load trends, then drill into cpuUtilTable (indexed by cpuinstance) to see per-CPU cpuuser, cpukernel, cpuidle, and waitio values. A CPU instance showing consistently low cpuidle combined with high waitio would indicate that CPU is bottlenecked on disk or I/O rather than compute, while a spike in cpukernel could point to excessive system-call or interrupt overhead. The cpudelta object provides the sampling interval used to compute these percentages.

What Can Be Monitored

  • 1/5/15-minute load averages
  • per-CPU idle time
  • per-CPU user time
  • per-CPU kernel time
  • per-CPU I/O wait time
