What Is JUNIPER-EX-SMI?

JUNIPER-EX-SMI is a Structure of Management Information (SMI) module that defines the enterprise OID subtree under which Juniper Networks registers its EX-series Ethernet switch MIB modules, rather than defining any data objects itself. It establishes named branches for switching, port mirroring/analysis, secure access ports (802.1X), PAE extensions, virtual chassis, and VLAN functionality that other Juniper EX MIB modules populate with actual managed objects. As a pure SMI/registration module it has no runtime hardware or software status objects of its own; the monitoring value it enables is indirect, since the subtrees it defines (e.g. jnxExVirtualChassis, jnxExSecureAccessPort) are where dependent MIBs expose virtual-chassis health, port security state, and VLAN configuration for actual polling. It is foundational to and depended upon by the broader family of JUNIPER-EX-* MIB modules for EX-series switches. It is deployed as part of the MIB hierarchy loaded on Juniper Networks EX-series Ethernet switches, and network engineers often consult this JUNIPER-EX-SMI reference to understand how the vendor's EX-series OID tree is organized.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JUNIPER-EX-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper EX-series Ethernet switch (any generation)

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only the OID subtree structure (jnxExSwitching, jnxExAnalyzer, jnxExSecureAccessPort, jnxExPaeExtension, jnxExVirtualChassis, jnxExVlan) and contains no runtime data objects or tables of its own, so no monitoring/polling scenario can be honestly constructed from this module; actual pollable objects live in the dependent JUNIPER-EX-* MIBs registered under these branches.
