Organization: Hewlett-Packard NetMetrix Division

Category: Network Interfaces, Technology: VLAN, VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: HP/HPE

Description: Hewlett-Packard NetMetrix ISL (Inter-Switch Link) VLAN MIB providing SNMP objects for Cisco ISL VLAN tagging monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ISLVLAN-MIB?

ISLVLAN-MIB, published as part of HP NetMetrix tooling, provides SNMP objects for monitoring Cisco ISL (Inter-Switch Link) VLAN tagging on switches. It exposes configuration and status data about VLAN trunk control (data source, VTP domain, VTP community, enable state) and the mapping of VLAN IDs learned or configured over ISL trunks. Its monitoring value is centered on VLAN/trunking configuration and connectivity status rather than hardware environmental metrics, letting operators verify that VLAN trunking and VTP domain membership are correctly configured across ISL links. It is explicitly tied to Cisco's ISL and VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) technologies, making it dependent on those Cisco-specific standards rather than IETF ones. It is typically deployed in HP NetMetrix-managed networks that include Cisco switches using legacy ISL trunking for VLAN tagging. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ISLVLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ISLVLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switches using ISL trunking (monitored via HP NetMetrix)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would inspect islVlanControlTable, indexed by islVlanControlIndex, to verify islVlanControlVtpDomain and islVlanControlVtpCommunity match the expected VTP domain, and check islVlanControlEnable to confirm ISL monitoring is active on a given interface. islVlanTable, keyed by islVlanId, would then be polled to enumerate which VLANs are actually present on the ISL trunk, revealing VLAN misconfiguration if expected VLANs are missing.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ISL VLAN control/enable state
  • VTP domain and community
  • VLANs present on ISL trunk
  • ISL data source per interface
