Category: Network Interfaces, Telephony and VoIP

Description: Defines managed objects for SNMP-based management of ISDN interfaces, including Basic Rate physical interfaces, B (bearer) channels, and D (signaling) channels.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring ISDN-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is ISDN-MIB?

ISDN-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB for managing Integrated Services Digital Network interfaces, vendor-neutral and applicable to any router or access device with BRI/PRI ISDN interfaces. It exposes objects describing Basic Rate physical interface configuration, individual B (bearer) channel status, and D (signaling) channel activity. Administrators use it to monitor hardware/software status such as line topology, interface mode, signaling mode, and per-channel operational status to detect failed calls or channel failures. It depends on and extends the IF-MIB's ifTable for its underlying interface indexing model. It is typically deployed on ISDN routers, terminal adapters, and dial-backup gateways in branch-office or WAN backup scenarios. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the ISDN-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ISDN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ISDN routers and terminal adapters
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • WAN dial-backup gateways

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll isdnBasicRateTable/isdnBasicRateEntry for isdnBasicRateIfType, isdnBasicRateLineTopology, and isdnBasicRateSignalMode to verify BRI line provisioning, and isdnBearerTable/isdnBearerEntry for isdnBearerOperStatus and isdnBearerChannelType to see which B-channels are actively carrying calls. A channel whose isdnBearerOperStatus flips to down while isdnBearerPeerAddress still shows an active peer address would indicate a dropped call or line fault worth alerting on.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ISDN BRI line topology
  • interface mode (TE/NT)
  • signaling mode
  • B-channel operational status
  • channel type (voice/data)
  • peer address of active calls

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using isdnSigStatsInCalls OID:

Select a device implementing ISDN-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type isdnSigStatsInCalls into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of incoming calls on this interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
