Category: Network Monitoring (RMON)
Description: Defines managed objects for standard packet sampling and filtering functions used by IPFIX selection processes.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IPFIX-SELECTOR-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is IPFIX-SELECTOR-MIB?
IPFIX-SELECTOR-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF/IANA-maintained standards MIB that defines the registry of standard packet-sampling and filtering "selector functions" (such as select-all) referenced from the ipfixSelectorTable in the main IPFIX-MIB. Rather than exposing live counters itself, it acts as an OID registry/placeholder tree (ipfixSelectorFunctions) that IPFIX implementations point into when configuring which sampling or filtering algorithm a given Observation Point uses. Its role in monitoring hardware/software status is indirect: it does not report device health, uptime, or performance metrics itself, but it underpins the correctness of flow-sampling configuration on devices implementing IPFIX, affecting the accuracy of traffic-monitoring data collected elsewhere. It is explicitly dependent on the IPFIX-MIB (RFC 5815) and is maintained through IANA/IETF Expert Review per RFC 5226, extending as new standard selector functions are defined. It is deployed wherever IPFIX-capable routers, switches, or flow probes implement configurable packet selection/sampling for flow export. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IPFIX-SELECTOR-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IPFIX-SELECTOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applies to IPFIX-capable routers, switches, and flow-export probes
Monitoring Examples
This module is essentially a conformance/registry module rather than one exposing runtime instance data — its content (ipfixSelectorFunctions, ipfixFuncSelectAll, ipfixFuncSelectAllAvail) is a set of named OID identifiers referenced by configuration in the separate IPFIX-MIB's ipfixSelectorTable, so there is no standalone monitoring scenario to poll from this module alone. An administrator would instead look at the IPFIX-MIB's selector table entries and see one of these OIDs (e.g., ipfixFuncSelectAll) as the value identifying which sampling function is active on a given selector.
