Description: Intel tunneling MIB providing SNMP objects for managing IP-over-IP tunnel interfaces and GRE tunnel configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INTEL-TUNNEL-MIB?

INTEL-TUNNEL-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Intel for managing IP-over-IP and GRE-style tunnel interfaces on Intel networking equipment. It exposes a tunnel information table keyed by interface index, covering tunnel operational state, direction (encapsulation versus decapsulation), local and remote IP addresses and ports, and per-tunnel receive/transmit queue sizes. This data supports monitoring the software/networking status of tunnel interfaces — whether a tunnel is up or down, which endpoints it connects, and whether its transmit or receive queues are backing up, which would indicate congestion or a downstream forwarding problem. It layers tunnel-specific fields on top of the standard ifIndex-based interface model shared with IETF's IF-MIB, though it does not appear to extend a specific standard tunnel MIB (such as RFC 2667). It is deployed on Intel routers/gateways that terminate IP tunnels, where operators need endpoint- and queue-level visibility beyond generic interface counters. Engineers can download the INTEL-TUNNEL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INTEL-TUNNEL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Intel router/gateway with IP tunneling support

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tunnelInfoTable/tunnelInfoEntry, keyed by tunnelInfoIfIndex, to check tunnelInfoState and confirm a given tunnel is up, then read tunnelInfoLocalAddress/tunnelInfoRemoteAddress and tunnelInfoLocalPort/tunnelInfoRemotePort to verify it terminates at the expected peer. tunnelInfoReceiveQueueSize and tunnelInfoTransmitQueueSize climbing steadily would signal that the tunnel is congested or that the remote end isn't draining traffic. tunnelInfoDirection clarifies whether a given row represents the inbound or outbound leg of the tunnel.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tunnel operational state
  • tunnel local/remote IP address
  • tunnel local/remote port
  • tunnel receive queue size
  • tunnel transmit queue size
  • tunnel direction

RFC description

Defines a Management Information Base module for managing IP tunnels of any type over IPv4 and IPv6 networks, allowing monitoring and configuration of various tunneling protocols such as GRE, L2TP, and IPv6-in-IPv4 tunnels through standard SNMP management.
