What Is IB-SMI-MIB?
IB-SMI-MIB is Infoblox's top-level Structure of Management Information module, defining the enterprise OID hierarchy under which all other Infoblox SNMP MIBs (covering DNS/DHCP appliances, NIOS systems, and related products) are registered. It does not itself carry runtime monitoring data; instead it establishes the naming tree for Infoblox product lines, including entries for default, RSP2, Cisco-branded, VM, and vNIOS appliance variants. Its practical use in monitoring is identification and organization: an NMS uses these OID arcs (reflected in sysObjectID) to recognize which specific Infoblox appliance model or virtual form factor it is talking to, which then determines which functional Infoblox MIBs and polling templates to apply for hardware/software status. It is foundational to and depended upon by every other Infoblox enterprise MIB, acting as the common root namespace. It is used across all Infoblox NIOS-based DNS/DHCP/IPAM appliances, whether physical or virtualized. Documentation for the IB-SMI-MIB MIB is commonly consulted specifically to look up this OID arc structure before configuring polling for a new Infoblox appliance model.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IB-SMI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Infoblox Trinzic X6 (NIOS 9.0.1+, 2024) — current physical/virtual DDI appliance series, ~50% faster DNS/DHCP than the prior generation
Monitoring Examples
The sample objects (infobloxProducts, ibDefault, ibRsp2, ibCisco, ibVm, ibVnios) are pure OID-arc identifiers, not data-bearing objects, so this module functions as an identity/registration MIB rather than a source of live values. A monitoring system uses a device's sysObjectID value under the ibRsp2 or ibVnios arc, for example, to determine it is managing a specific Infoblox RSP2 appliance or a virtual NIOS instance, and then loads the corresponding Infoblox functional MIB for actual health polling.

RFC description
Infoblox MIB defining the structure of management information (SMI) and OID hierarchy for all Infoblox SNMP modules.
Start monitoring Infoblox NIOS DDI appliance, e.g. Trinzic X6 (root enterprise OID registration) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
