Description: IANA MIB defining textual conventions for Simplified Multicast Forwarding (SMF) in mobile ad-hoc networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IANA-SMF-MIB?

IANA-SMF-MIB is a vendor-neutral, IANA-maintained MIB module that defines textual conventions - IANAsmfOpModeIdTC and IANAsmfRssaIdTC - for use by the IETF SMF-MIB, which manages Simplified Multicast Forwarding (SMF) in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). It does not itself expose configuration, performance, or fault objects for a device; instead it standardizes the enumerated value sets used by the smfCapabilitiesOpModeID and smfCapabilitiesRssaID objects defined elsewhere. Because it is a textual-convention-only module, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; any monitoring of SMF operating mode or relay set selection algorithm happens through the SMF-MIB objects that import these type definitions. Its entire purpose is as a shared-type dependency for SMF-MIB, maintained by IANA so new SMF operating modes/algorithms can be registered without revising the base standard. It would be encountered in MANET routing deployments (e.g., military or tactical mesh networks) that implement SMF and expose it via SNMP. Engineers can download the IANA-SMF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-SMF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, applies to MANET/mesh routers implementing Simplified Multicast Forwarding

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only textual conventions, not runtime objects, so there is no polling scenario to describe for it directly; a management station would instead see IANAsmfOpModeIdTC/IANAsmfRssaIdTC values surface as the type of the smfCapabilitiesOpModeID and smfCapabilitiesRssaID objects when polling a device's SMF-MIB implementation.
