Category: Standard: IETF, Technology: Network Monitoring, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Declares Ericsson router agent capabilities for the IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819).

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-RMON-CAP?

ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-RMON-CAP is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module for Ericsson's Spitfire router platform that declares which parts of the standard IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819) the agent implements. Rather than exposing its own data objects, it documents support for RMON groups such as Ethernet statistics, history control, and Ethernet history collection. As a capabilities statement it has no runtime counters of its own, but it governs whether tools can rely on the router's RMON implementation to report interface hardware/software health such as Ethernet error counts, utilization, and historical traffic samples. It is explicitly dependent on and scoped against the IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819), which defines the actual objects it claims conformance to. It would be consulted by NMS/EMS integrators during onboarding to determine which RMON monitoring features a given Ericsson Spitfire router firmware version actually supports. Engineers can download the ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-RMON-CAP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-RMON-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson Spitfire router

Monitoring Examples

This is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, not a data-bearing MIB, so it has no pollable runtime objects of its own. Its purpose is purely descriptive: it states that the Ericsson Spitfire agent supports rmonEtherStatsGroup, rmonHistoryControlGroup, and rmonEthernetHistoryGroup from RFC 2819. A management application would read this capabilities statement (typically at compile time or during agent discovery) to decide it is safe to poll the corresponding RMON etherStatsTable and historyControlTable on this device, rather than to monitor any values directly.
