Description: Defines the IANAscopeSource and IANAmallocRangeSource textual conventions for identifying how multicast address scope and range information is learned.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IANA-MALLOC-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is IANA-MALLOC-MIB?
IANA-MALLOC-MIB is an IETF/IANA-maintained textual-convention MIB defining the IANAscopeSource and IANAmallocRangeSource conventions used by other MIBs to identify how multicast address scope and range information was learned (e.g., statically configured versus dynamically allocated via MALLOC/MASC-style protocols). It contains no runtime data objects of its own; instead it standardizes an enumerated type referenced by multicast-address-allocation MIBs elsewhere. As a pure textual-convention module, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status, uptime, temperature, CPU, or similar operational metrics on any device. Its entire purpose is a shared dependency: any MIB that models multicast scope/range allocation imports these conventions to represent the source of that information consistently, and changes to it require RFC publication or IESG Designated Expert review. It applies generically wherever multicast address allocation MIBs (e.g., for MALLOC/AAP/MASC-related management) are implemented on IP multicast-capable routers. Engineers can download the IANA-MALLOC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-MALLOC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- IP multicast-capable router
Monitoring Examples
This is a conformance/textual-convention module with no data objects (sample_objects is empty), so there is no runtime monitoring scenario to describe; it exists solely to be imported by other MIBs that need a standardized enumeration for how multicast scope/range data was learned.
