Description: IANA MIB defining textual conventions for describing power and energy relationships between devices per IETF energy management standards.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is IANA-ENERGY-RELATION-MIB?
IANA-ENERGY-RELATION-MIB is a vendor-neutral, IETF/IANA-maintained MIB that defines a textual convention describing power and energy relationships between devices, as part of the broader IETF energy management (EMAN) framework. Rather than exposing device-specific data itself, it provides the standardized enumeration/type used by other energy MIBs to indicate how one energy object relates to another (e.g., powers, is powered by, backs up). This makes it a foundational building-block MIB for software configuration of energy-monitoring relationships rather than a source of hardware sensor readings on its own, though it underpins monitoring of power topology status across devices that implement the EMAN model. It is explicitly a dependency for other IETF energy-management MIBs such as the ENTITY-MIB-based power/energy MIBs that reference its textual conventions. It is typically used in data center and telecom equipment power-management deployments implementing IETF energy monitoring standards across vendor-neutral infrastructure, and implementers typically consult the IANA-ENERGY-RELATION-MIB RFC for the authoritative definition of the EnergyRelation textual convention.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-ENERGY-RELATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applies to any energy-management-capable network/power equipment
Monitoring Examples
A monitoring system would reference the EnergyRelation textual convention defined here when reading relationship objects in an energy-monitoring MIB (such as an ENTITY-based power table) to determine, for example, that a PDU 'powers' a specific line card or that a UPS 'backs up' a rack of servers. Detecting an unexpected relationship value, or a device reporting no power-source relationship, could indicate a misconfigured power topology model in the energy-management software. Because this MIB contains only a shared type definition and no object instances of its own, it would never be polled directly but always in conjunction with a MIB that imports it.
