Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Technology: Network Monitoring, Vendor: Huawei

Description: Huawei RMON extensions MIB adding proprietary RMON-like statistics groups for switch fabric and backplane monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-RMON-EXT-MIB?

HUAWEI-RMON-EXT-MIB is a Huawei switch MIB that extends standard RMON with proprietary statistics groups, providing additional Remote Monitoring data beyond RFC 2819, specifically targeted at switch fabric and backplane-level traffic monitoring. It exposes extended counters and history/alarm-style objects covering internal switch fabric or backplane traffic statistics not captured by the base RMON groups. For monitoring, it supports deeper performance and traffic-load visibility into the switch's internal forwarding path, helping identify backplane congestion or abnormal internal traffic patterns that could indicate a hardware bottleneck or a misbehaving line card flooding the fabric, complementing the switch's software-level traffic statistics. It directly builds on and extends the IETF standard RMON-MIB (RFC 2819), adding Huawei-specific groups rather than replacing the base standard. It is deployed on Huawei switches, particularly higher-end modular platforms, where visibility into internal switch fabric performance is valuable for capacity planning and fault diagnosis. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-RMON-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-RMON-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei modular switches

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided, but a realistic scenario would involve polling the extended backplane/fabric statistics counters for a rising error or utilization rate, which would reveal a congested switch fabric or a line card pushing an abnormal volume of traffic internally.

What Can Be Monitored
