Category: Hardware and Environment, Optical and WDM, Vendor: Huawei

Description: Extends the standard Entity MIB for Huawei devices, providing CPU utilization, memory usage, entity operational/admin status, optical module parameters, and hardware production information.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring HUAWEI-ENTITY-EXTENT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is HUAWEI-ENTITY-EXTENT-MIB?

HUAWEI-ENTITY-EXTENT-MIB extends the standard IETF ENTITY-MIB with Huawei-specific hardware management objects for Huawei routers and switches. It exposes data covering CPU utilization, memory usage, entity administrative and operational status, optical transceiver module parameters, and hardware production/manufacturing information. This MIB is squarely a hardware health-monitoring module: it tracks CPU load, memory consumption, whether physical entities (cards, modules, ports) are administratively enabled and operationally up, plus optical module diagnostics and production/serial data useful for asset tracking. It explicitly depends on and extends the standard ENTITY-MIB, reusing its physical entity indexing while adding Huawei-private columns. It is deployed in Huawei carrier and enterprise network devices as a core building block for NMS dashboards that show chassis health and hardware inventory. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-ENTITY-EXTENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-ENTITY-EXTENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei routers
  • Huawei switches
  • Huawei network devices with entity-based hardware inventory

Monitoring Examples

An NMS would poll the extended entity table to read CPU and memory utilization per entity index and correlate it with the standard entPhysicalTable to identify which card or module is under load, while also checking optical module parameters for transceivers plugged into that entity. If entity operational status flips to down for a linecard while admin status remains up, that signals an unexpected hardware fault. Sustained elevated CPU or memory readings can indicate a control-plane process consuming excessive resources.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPU utilization
  • memory usage
  • entity admin/operational status
  • optical module Tx/Rx parameters
  • hardware production/serial information
