Description: Manages Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI) wide-area Layer 2 extension tunnels on HP/Comware devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-EVI-MIB?

HPN-ICF-EVI-MIB is an HP Networking (Comware/H3C) vendor MIB for managing Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI), a technology that extends Layer 2 VLANs across a Layer 3 wide-area network by tunneling Ethernet frames between geographically separated sites. It exposes site identification, designated VLAN configuration, per-interface extended-VLAN mappings, and source-to-destination VLAN mapping tables that define how local VLANs are stitched to remote sites through the EVI tunnel. As a monitoring target this MIB is mainly configuration-state oriented, but its notifications and VLAN-mapping tables let an operator confirm that the intended Layer 2 extension topology (which local VLANs map to which remote sites) is correctly and currently provisioned, catching misconfigurations that would otherwise cause traffic to fail to traverse the WAN tunnel. It builds on standard VLAN and interface concepts (dot1Q-style VLAN indexing) though it is not a direct extension of a single named IETF MIB. It is deployed on HP/Comware core or data-center-interconnect routers/switches used to stretch Layer 2 domains between geographically distinct data centers. Engineers can download the HPN-ICF-EVI-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-EVI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/H3C Comware core switch
  • HP/H3C Comware data-center-interconnect device

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would query hpnicfEviIfExtendVlanTable (via hpnicfEviIfExtendVlanIndex and hpnicfEviIfExtendVlanLAV) to confirm which VLANs are being extended over a given EVI interface, and check hpnicfEviIfExtendVlanRowStatus to verify the extension entry is active. The hpnicfEviIfVlanMappingTable, keyed by hpnicfEviIfVlanMappingSiteId with hpnicfEviIfVlanMappingSrc/hpnicfEviIfVlanMappingDst, would be polled to confirm that a local VLAN is correctly mapped to the expected VLAN ID at a remote hpnicfEviSiteID, revealing a misconfigured or dropped mapping if traffic between sites is failing. hpnicfEviNotifications would alert on changes to these mappings or site connectivity events.

What Can Be Monitored

  • EVI site ID
  • designated VLAN
  • per-interface extended VLAN list
  • VLAN mapping row status
  • source-to-destination VLAN mapping per site

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfEviMacLocalMacs OID:

Select an HP/H3C Comware core/data-center-interconnect switch (Ethernet Virtual Interconnect) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfEviMacLocalMacs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of local MACs. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
