Description: HP Networking ICF SNMP MIB for ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) interface statistics and configuration on HPN ATM devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-AAL5-MIB?

HPN-ICF-AAL5-MIB is an HP Networking (ICF platform) module that supplements RFC 1695's ATM MIB with AAL5 (ATM Adaptation Layer 5) specific objects not covered by the standard, targeting HP's ATM-capable networking hardware. It exposes per-VCC (Virtual Channel Connection) configuration and traffic statistics, essentially a performance-counter and configuration data set for ATM adaptation layer circuits. For monitoring hardware/software status, it is chiefly useful for tracking the operational state of individual AAL5 virtual circuits and their packet/octet throughput, which reflects whether ATM transport on the device is functioning and how busy it is, rather than general device health like CPU or temperature. It explicitly builds on and extends RFC 1695 (the ATM MIB), so it should be read alongside that standard MIB for full context. It would be deployed in legacy HP ATM switch/router environments still carrying AAL5-encapsulated traffic, such as older WAN or telecom-adjacent installations. Engineers can download the HPN-ICF-AAL5-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-AAL5-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP Networking (ICF-based) ATM switches/routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll hpnicfAal5VccTable/hpnicfAal5VccEntry, indexed by hpnicfAal5VccVpi and hpnicfAal5VccVci, to check hpnicfAal5VccInPkts, hpnicfAal5VccOutPkts, hpnicfAal5VccInOctets, and hpnicfAal5VccOutOctets for a given virtual circuit's traffic volume. hpnicfAal5VccState would be checked to confirm whether a specific VCC is up, and a sudden state change or a stall in packet/octet counters would indicate an ATM circuit failure or misconfiguration.

What Can Be Monitored

  • AAL5 VCC operational state
  • inbound/outbound packet counts per VCC
  • inbound/outbound octet counts per VCC
  • VPI/VCI circuit identification

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfAal5VccInPkts OID:

Select an HP Networking (ICF-based) ATM switch/router (AAL5 circuits) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfAal5VccInPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of AAL5 CPCS PDUs received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
