Description: HP-OV-TOPO-DB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-OV-TOPO-DB?

HP-OV-TOPO-DB is an HP OpenView proprietary SNMP module exposed by the HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM) topology database station, describing the state of the network-discovery/topology component itself rather than a piece of network hardware. It exposes information about the OpenView station's discovery station type and software version, a description string, the count of managed nodes, license node-limit and expiration data, the topology database creation time, an event sequence number, local time, and filter/name identifiers. In monitoring terms this is entirely software-status data about the network-management platform: hpOVDStnManagedNodeCount reveals how many devices the topology database currently tracks, hpOVDStnLicenseNodeLimit and hpOVDStnLicenseExpDate flag an approaching license ceiling or expiration, and hpOVDStnEventSeqNr/hpOVDStnTopoDBCreateTime help detect a stale or recently rebuilt topology database. It has no apparent dependency on other standard MIBs, being specific to the HP OpenView (nm/openView enterprise) product family. It is deployed wherever HP OpenView NNM is used as the network management system, with the MIB queried by other tools or scripts wanting programmatic insight into NNM's own topology/discovery health. Engineers can download the HP-OV-TOPO-DB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-OV-TOPO-DB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM) management stations

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check hpOVDStnManagedNodeCount against hpOVDStnLicenseNodeLimit to see how close the OpenView installation is to its licensed device ceiling, and check hpOVDStnLicenseExpDate to catch an approaching license expiration before it disrupts discovery. hpOVDStnTopoDBCreateTime and hpOVDStnEventSeqNr would be compared over time to confirm the topology database is being actively updated rather than stalled, and hpOVDStnDescr/hpOVDStnVersion identify which NNM build is running, useful when correlating behavior with a known software version's bugs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • managed node count
  • license node limit
  • license expiration date
  • topology database creation time
  • event sequence number
  • OpenView station software version
