Description: Registers type definitions for storage types, device types, and file system types used as values in the Host Resources MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES?

HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES is a companion module to the IETF standard HOST-RESOURCES-MIB (RFC 2790), and is a vendor-neutral, standards-based module that registers enumerated type values used elsewhere in host-resource management - specifically the sets of recognized storage types (e.g., RAM, virtual memory, fixed/removable disk), device types, and file-system types. It does not itself expose live counters or status tables; instead it supplies the OBJECT-IDENTITY values that the main HOST-RESOURCES-MIB's storage, device, and filesystem tables use to classify each storage area, device, or filesystem they report on. Because it is purely a type/registration module, it is not directly used to monitor hardware or software status itself - its role is definitional, enabling the real monitoring objects in HOST-RESOURCES-MIB (memory/storage utilization, disk device state, filesystem type) to be interpreted correctly. It exists solely as a dependency of the IETF HOST-RESOURCES-MIB and is maintained by IANA for that purpose. It applies to any host system (server, workstation, or general-purpose computer) running an SNMP agent that implements Host Resources monitoring. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any general-purpose host/server running an SNMP agent

Monitoring Examples

This module is a type-registration/conformance-style MIB rather than a data-bearing one - it defines identifiers like hrStorageTypes, hrDeviceTypes, and hrFSTypes that are referenced as classification values by the actual monitoring tables in HOST-RESOURCES-MIB, so it has no pollable counters or status objects of its own and no realistic standalone monitoring scenario applies.
