Category: Technology: Network Monitoring, Technology: Traffic Monitoring

Description: A historical statistics MIB providing storage and retrieval of time-series network performance data.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HIST-MIB?

HIST-MIB is a historical statistics module associated with modem/NAS (network access server) equipment, referenced here through object prefixes tied to USR (U.S. Robotics) and NAS/modem management. It exposes time-series data organized into current and rolling interval tables that snapshot device counters at fixed points in time. Its primary monitoring value is tracking hardware reliability over time, specifically management-bus failures and watchdog timeouts, which are key indicators of an embedded system's internal health and stability. It appears self-contained but conceptually depends on the standard SNMP historical-control model (similar in spirit to RMON history) for interval bucketing and indexing. It would typically be deployed on remote-access modem racks or NAS shelves where a NOC wants trend data on hardware faults rather than just instantaneous status. Engineers can download the HIST-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HIST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • USR/NAS remote-access modem shelf
  • dial-up/modem card equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll mdmNacHistCurrentTable to see the live-accumulating counters mdmNacHistCurrentMgmtBusFailures and mdmNacHistCurrentWatchdogTimouts since mdmNacHistCurrentStartTime, then cross-check against mdmNacHistIntervalTable (indexed by mdmNacHistIntervalIndex with mdmNacHistIntervalStartTime) to see how those same failure counts trended across prior fixed intervals. A sudden spike in mdmNacHistIntervalMgmtBusFailures in one interval versus a long baseline of zero would flag a failing management bus or a card needing replacement. Because the tables are indexed, a monitoring system can graph failures per historical bucket to distinguish a one-time glitch from a persistent hardware degradation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • management bus failures
  • watchdog timeouts
  • history interval start times
  • current interval counters
