Category: Vendor: H3C/HH3C

Description: Manages ARP table entries on H3C devices, providing static/dynamic ARP configuration and MAC-IP binding objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HH3C-ARP-ENTRY-MIB?

HH3C-ARP-ENTRY-MIB is an H3C (New H3C) proprietary MIB extending standard ARP management on H3C switches and routers, adding vendor-specific counters and OpenFlow-aware ARP entry tracking beyond the generic IP-MIB ARP table. It exposes objects for counting ARP entries overall and, notably, tracking ARP entries associated with OpenFlow-controlled flows, reflecting H3C's support for SDN/OpenFlow-integrated switching. Its monitoring value is primarily around ARP table health and capacity: operators use the entry-count objects to watch for ARP table exhaustion or unexpected growth, which can indicate ARP spoofing/flooding or a misbehaving OpenFlow controller. It supplements rather than replaces the standard IETF IP-MIB ARP table, adding H3C-specific counters on top of that base. It is deployed on H3C data-center and campus switches/routers, particularly those integrated with SDN/OpenFlow controllers, and administrators can download the HH3C-ARP-ENTRY-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for these deployments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HH3C-ARP-ENTRY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C (New H3C) switches and routers
  • H3C SDN/OpenFlow-integrated network devices

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll hh3cARPEntryCountObjects to get overall ARP table size and hh3cARPEntryOpenFlowCount specifically to see how many ARP entries were installed via OpenFlow flow rules — a sudden spike in either could indicate ARP table exhaustion risk or an OpenFlow controller pushing unexpected bindings. Comparing these counts over time helps distinguish normal dynamic learning from an ARP-based attack or misconfiguration on the switch.

What Can Be Monitored

  • total ARP entry count
  • OpenFlow-installed ARP entry count

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hh3cARPEntryOpenFlowCount OID:

Select an H3C switch/router, SDN/OpenFlow-integrated (ARP table counters) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hh3cARPEntryOpenFlowCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the count of ARP entries of type OpenFlow. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
