Description: GSMP-SERVICE-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GSMP-SERVICE-MIB?

This MIB module defines managed objects for General Switch Management Protocol (GSMP) interfaces, a control-plane protocol historically used to let an external controller manage ATM or label switches. It exposes network management service data related to GSMP sessions and interfaces between a GSMP controller and switch. Given the protocol-control nature of GSMP, its monitoring value centers on the software/protocol status of GSMP sessions, whether a controller-to-switch adjacency is established and operating correctly, rather than physical hardware sensors. GSMP itself is defined by IETF RFCs, so this MIB likely builds on those protocol definitions and may relate to underlying ATM or Ethernet interface MIBs. It is deployed on ATM switches or GSMP-controlled switching fabric elements in service provider networks using external switch controllers, as defined in the GSMP-SERVICE-MIB RFC that this module implements.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GSMP-SERVICE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ATM or label switches under GSMP external controller management
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll GSMP interface/session status objects to confirm a controller has successfully established a GSMP adjacency with a given switch. Session state transitions would be monitored to detect a controller losing contact with a managed switch. Because GSMP is protocol-control oriented, any session flapping detected here would prompt investigation into underlying link or controller software issues.

What Can Be Monitored

  • GSMP session/adjacency status
  • controller-to-switch connection state
  • GSMP interface configuration
