Category: ATM, Vendor: Fore Systems (ATM)

Description: Fore Systems IMA (Inverse Multiplexing for ATM) extension MIB providing additional IMA group and link performance objects for ForeRunner switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-Ima-Ext-MIB?

Fore-Ima-Ext-MIB is a Marconi/FORE Systems proprietary extension to the standard ATM Forum IMA (Inverse Multiplexing for ATM) MIB, adding vendor-specific configuration objects for IMA groups and links on ForeRunner ATM switches. It exposes version data tracking configured versus operational IMA protocol versions per group, supplementing the base IMA MIB's link and group status tables. Administrators use it to confirm software/protocol version compatibility across bonded IMA links, since a mismatch between configured and operational version can mean a group has fallen back due to incompatible far-end firmware. It explicitly extends the ATM Forum IMA MIB, depending on that standard for the underlying group/link status and alarm objects. Typical deployment is in FORE/Marconi ATM access equipment using IMA to bond multiple T1/E1 circuits into higher-bandwidth ATM trunks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Fore-Ima-Ext-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-Ima-Ext-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fore Systems/Marconi ForeRunner ATM switch (IMA-capable)

Monitoring Examples

Polling foreImaVersionTable/foreImaVersionEntry lets an admin compare foreImaVersionConfigured against foreImaVersionOperational for each IMA group; a mismatch indicates the group has fallen back to a lower IMA protocol version, likely due to incompatible firmware on the far end. The foreImaVersion object reports the overall supported protocol revision, useful when troubleshooting why an IMA group fails to reach full bandwidth aggregation across its member links.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configured IMA version
  • operational IMA version
  • IMA protocol version support
