Description: Fore Systems J2 module MIB providing configuration and status management for the ForeRunner J2 ATM switch blade or expansion module.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-J2-MIB?

Fore-J2-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Fore Systems, a pioneer ATM equipment vendor later acquired by Marconi, for the J2 line module, a T3/E3-class trunk interface blade used in ForeRunner ATM switches. It exposes configuration data for board/module/port identification, line framing parameters (line length, loopback configuration, transmit clock source), plus operational status and error counters for the line. It is used to monitor the hardware status of the J2 line card, including line status (up/down/alarm), loopback state, idle unassigned cell counts, and per-port error statistics, which are key indicators of physical-layer WAN link health on the ATM switch. It is a self-contained proprietary Fore Systems MIB with no notable dependency on external standard MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2 SMI conventions. It's typically deployed on legacy ForeRunner ATM switches equipped with J2 T3/E3 trunk modules in carrier or enterprise ATM backbone networks. Engineers can download the Fore-J2-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-J2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switch (J2 module)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll j2ConfTable/j2ConfEntry (indexed by j2ConfBoard, j2ConfModule, j2ConfPort) to confirm each J2 port's line length, loopback configuration, and transmit clock source settings match the expected provisioning. j2LineStatus reveals whether the T3/E3 line is currently in an alarm or normal state, and j2IdleUnassignedCells tracks ATM cell-layer idle traffic, useful for detecting cell-level framing issues. The j2ErrorTable/j2ErrorEntry pair provides per-port error counters, so a rising error count alongside an abnormal j2LineStatus would indicate a degrading physical WAN link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • line status (up/down/alarm)
  • loopback configuration
  • transmit clock source
  • line length setting
  • idle unassigned cell count
  • per-port error counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using j2B8ZSCodingErrors OID:

Select a Fore Systems (later Marconi) ForeRunner ATM switch (J2 T3/E3 trunk line module) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type j2B8ZSCodingErrors into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of B8ZS coding violation errors. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
