Category: RADIUS and AAA, Vendor: Juniper

Description: Funk Software (Juniper) Steel-Belted RADIUS rate statistics MIB providing current, average, and peak RADIUS authentication and accounting rate metrics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FNKRATE-MIB?

This MIB, from Funk Software (later acquired by Juniper Networks), provides rate-statistics objects for Steel-Belted RADIUS (SBR) servers, exposing current, average, and peak request-processing rates for RADIUS authentication and accounting traffic. It is primarily a software performance-counter MIB focused on the throughput of the RADIUS service rather than physical hardware. For software status monitoring it directly supports detecting overload or unusual traffic patterns on the RADIUS server by comparing the current rate against historical average/peak values, which can flag a DoS condition, a misconfigured client flooding requests, or general service degradation. No explicit dependency MIBs are indicated, though it complements the vendor's broader Funk/SBR MIB suite for RADIUS session and configuration monitoring. Typically deployed on servers running Steel-Belted RADIUS (SBR) or SBR Carrier software providing AAA services for network access. Engineers can download the FNKRATE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FNKRATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Steel-Belted RADIUS (SBR) AAA server

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were extracted for this module, so specifics cannot be grounded in exact object names, but based on the description an administrator would poll the current authentication/accounting rate objects and compare them against the average and peak rate objects to detect a sudden spike suggesting an authentication flood or a misbehaving client overwhelming the RADIUS server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current RADIUS authentication rate
  • current RADIUS accounting rate
  • average request rate
  • peak request rate
