Category: Protocol: ERPS, Standard: IETF

Description: Covers Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (G.8032/ERPS), including ring instances, node roles, and failover state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERPS-MIB?

ERPS-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB for managing Ethernet Ring Protection Switching as defined by ITU-T G.8032, a protocol that provides sub-50ms failover for Ethernet rings by designating a Ring Protection Link (RPL) and coordinating node roles. It belongs to the carrier Ethernet resiliency technology area and exposes configuration and state data for ring instances, including node role (e.g., RPL owner/neighbor), ring port assignments, and current protection-switching state (idle, protection, or forced/manual switch). Its monitoring value is centered on network resiliency/fault status: tracking whether a ring is in its normal idle state or has failed over into protection mode reveals link or node failures within the ring, making this MIB a key tool for detecting topology faults in carrier Ethernet rings. As an ITU-T G.8032 implementation, it is inherently tied to that standard and typically coexists with underlying bridge/VLAN MIBs (e.g., Q-BRIDGE-MIB) for the ports it manages. Typical deployment context is metro Ethernet and carrier-grade ring topologies where multiple switches are connected in a ring for physical-layer redundancy. Engineers can download the ERPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • carrier Ethernet switch/node in a ring topology

Monitoring Examples

No concrete sample objects were provided for this module, so exact table/object names cannot be cited, but standard ERPS MIB implementations expose a ring-instance table describing each ring's node role, RPL port, and current protection state. An administrator would poll the ring state object to detect a transition from idle to protection-switching state, which indicates a break or failure has occurred somewhere in the ring and traffic has been rerouted around it.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ring protection state (idle/protection)
  • ring node role (RPL owner/neighbor)
  • ring port assignment
  • forced/manual switch status
