What Is EQLCONTROLLER-MIB?

EQLCONTROLLER-MIB is Dell's (originally EqualLogic's) proprietary MIB for the RAID/storage controllers inside EqualLogic PS-series iSCSI SAN arrays, exposing per-controller identity, firmware, and health data. It covers configuration/identity information (model, CM revision, software revision, flash image revision) as well as operational hardware-status data for each controller in what is typically a dual-controller high-availability array. It is squarely a hardware/software status monitoring MIB: eqlControllerBatteryStatus flags a failing cache-protection battery, eqlControllerProcessorTemp and eqlControllerChipsetTemp expose thermal health, eqlControllerUpTime shows how long a controller has been running (and whether it recently rebooted/failed over), and eqlControllerPrimaryOrSecondary reveals which controller currently holds the active role in the redundant pair. It is a standalone Dell/EqualLogic proprietary MIB with no stated dependency on external standard MIBs. It is typically deployed on Dell EqualLogic PS-series SAN arrays in enterprise storage environments where controller redundancy and thermal/battery health are critical to data availability, and the EQLCONTROLLER-MIB download is available directly to administrators who want to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll eqlControllerTable/eqlControllerEntry per eqlControllerIndex to compare eqlControllerPrimaryOrSecondary against expectation and check eqlControllerUpTime for an unplanned recent restart of a controller. A rising eqlControllerProcessorTemp or eqlControllerChipsetTemp alongside a degraded eqlControllerBatteryStatus would warn of a controller nearing thermal or cache-protection failure, and comparing eqlControllerSwRevision/eqlControllerCMRevision across both controllers in the pair would catch a firmware mismatch after a partial upgrade.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using eqlControllerUpTime OID:

Select a Dell EqualLogic PS-series iSCSI SAN storage array (RAID controller identity/health) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type eqlControllerUpTime into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This variable specifies time interval since the controller was last booted in seconds. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is unexpectedly low (e.g. under 10 minutes), since that indicates a recent, possibly unplanned, reboot or restart. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
