Category: Protocol: PPP

Description: Enterprise PPP extension MIB providing vendor-specific objects for managing Point-to-Point Protocol links and parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ECPPP-MIB?

This is an enterprise PPP extension MIB, associated with the "eicon" enterprise branch (Eicon Networks/Eicon Technology, a maker of WAN/ISDN and telephony interface cards), providing vendor-specific objects for managing Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) links beyond the standard IETF PPP MIB. It exposes per-port PPP link status and negotiated protocol parameters, including link state, authentication protocol in use, quality protocol, negotiated packet size, window size, and compression settings. For monitoring purposes it is directly about link/software status: ecpppStatusState reports whether a PPP link is up/down/negotiating, ecpppStatusAuthentProtocol confirms which authentication method was negotiated, and ecpppStatusNegotiatedPktSize/ecpppStatusWindowSize/ecpppStatusMaxPacketSize reveal the negotiated link parameters useful for diagnosing throughput or fragmentation issues. It supplements the standard IETF PPP MIB family with vendor-specific detail not covered there. It is deployed on Eicon WAN/dial-up adapter cards or routers running PPP links, such as ISDN or leased-line WAN connections. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ECPPP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ECPPP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Eicon WAN/ISDN adapter or router running PPP

Monitoring Examples

A network engineer troubleshooting a slow or flapping WAN link would poll ecpppStatusTable/ecpppStatusEntry keyed by ecpppStatusPortRef to check ecpppStatusState for link stability and ecpppStatusAuthentProtocol to confirm authentication succeeded as configured. ecpppStatusNegotiatedPktSize and ecpppStatusWindowSize would be compared against expected values to spot a suboptimal negotiation causing poor throughput, and ecpppStatusProtocolCompr/ecpppStatusAddrCtrlCompr checked to confirm compression negotiated as expected. A link stuck in a non-"open" ecpppStatusState would indicate a PPP negotiation failure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PPP link state
  • negotiated authentication protocol
  • negotiated packet size and window size
  • compression settings
  • link quality protocol
