Category: Protocol: OpenFlow, Vendor: Dell
Description: Manages OpenFlow SDN protocol configuration and flow table statistics on Dell switches.

What Is Dell-openflow-MIB?
Dell-openflow-MIB is a Dell-specific SNMP module (using the "rl" prefix inherited from the Radlan/Marvell switch management stack used in Dell Networking/PowerConnect switches) for configuring and monitoring OpenFlow software-defined networking (SDN) support on the switch. It exposes configuration-oriented data such as whether OpenFlow is supported and enabled, the SDN controller's IP address and TCP port, the protocol type in use, and the default forwarding action for unmatched flows. Rather than hardware health telemetry, it is used to monitor the operational/software status of the OpenFlow feature itself -- whether the agent is enabled, its persistence across a reset, and its controller connection parameters -- functioning as a software-service status check for that switch feature. It has no explicit dependency on other MIBs described here, but it complements standard IF-MIB/BRIDGE-MIB interface and forwarding data on the same switch. It is typically deployed on Dell/Force10 or PowerConnect switches operating in an SDN fabric where a centralized OpenFlow controller manages flow-table forwarding behavior. Engineers can download the Dell-openflow-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-openflow-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell Networking / PowerConnect switch
- Dell Force10 switch (SDN-capable)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls rlOpenFlowEnable and rlOpenFlowSupported to confirm the switch's OpenFlow agent is active, then checks rlOpenFlowServerIpAddr and rlOpenFlowTcpPort to verify the switch is pointed at the correct SDN controller. If rlOpenFlowProtocolType or rlOpenFlowDefaultForwardAction unexpectedly changes, it can indicate a misconfiguration causing unmatched flows to be dropped instead of forwarded. Comparing rlOpenFlowEnable with rlOpenFlowEnableAfterReset also reveals whether OpenFlow will persist through a reboot, catching cases where a change was made only to the running configuration.
What Can Be Monitored
- OpenFlow support status
- OpenFlow enable/disable state
- SDN controller IP address and TCP port
- OpenFlow protocol type
- default flow forwarding action
- OpenFlow persistence after reset
