Description: Manages Loopback Detection (LBD) to identify and respond to network loops on Dell switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-LBD-MIB?
Dell-LBD-MIB is a Dell proprietary MIB managing Loopback Detection (LBD), a switch feature that identifies Ethernet loops on access ports (e.g. from a misconfigured cable or unmanaged switch) and automatically disables the affected port to prevent broadcast storms. It exposes global enable/mode/interval configuration alongside a per-port table showing administrative and operational status of loop detection. Its monitoring purpose is squarely fault detection, tracking which ports have detected a loop and been shut down operationally, a key indicator of a physical wiring or topology fault on the network. It is a self-contained vendor MIB without notable dependency on standard MIBs, though conceptually related to STP loop-guard mechanisms. It is deployed on Dell PowerConnect/Networking access-layer switches to protect against accidental network loops in wiring closets. Engineers can download the Dell-LBD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-LBD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell PowerConnect/Networking switch (access layer)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rlLbdPortTable/rlLbdPortEntry checking rlLbdPortOperStatus against rlLbdPortAdminStatus to find a port that has been automatically shut down by loop detection versus one intentionally disabled, which quickly isolates a mis-cabled port causing a broadcast storm. Global settings rlLbdEnable, rlLbdDetectionInterval, and rlLbdMode let an operator confirm the feature is active fleet-wide and how frequently loop checks run.
What Can Be Monitored
- loopback detection global enable state
- detection interval and mode
- per-port administrative status
- per-port operational status (loop detected/shutdown)
