Category: Vendor: Dell

Description: Provides physical layer (PHY) diagnostics and configuration objects for Dell switch ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Dell-PHY-MIB?

This Dell private MIB provides Layer 1 physical-layer diagnostic testing for switch ports, such as cable diagnostics used to detect wiring faults. It exposes a test-set table for initiating a diagnostic test and a corresponding test-get table for retrieving the test's status, result, units, and any alarm condition. It is squarely a hardware-health monitoring tool: the test result, alarm flag, and timestamp reveal cable faults such as opens, shorts, or impedance mismatches on a specific port, which is directly useful for troubleshooting suspected physical-link problems. It complements the standard IF-MIB physical interface objects for the same ports. It is typically deployed on Dell switches where technicians run on-demand cable diagnostics to isolate physical-layer link issues. Engineers can download the Dell-PHY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-PHY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell network switch (PowerConnect/N-Series family)

Monitoring Examples

A technician initiates a cable test by writing to rlPhyTestSetTable/rlPhyTestSetEntry with a chosen rlPhyTestSetType, then polls rlPhyTestGetTable/rlPhyTestGetEntry for rlPhyTestGetStatus to see when the test completes. The rlPhyTestGetResult and rlPhyTestGetUnits objects report the measured value (such as estimated cable length to a fault), while rlPhyTestGetAlarm flags whether an abnormal condition like an open or short was detected. rlPhyTestGetTimeStamp records when the test ran, letting the technician correlate results with a specific troubleshooting session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • physical layer test status
  • test result value and units
  • test alarm flag
  • test execution timestamp
