Description: Defines enterprise-specific SNMP trap notifications for Dell switch events and alarms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Dell-TRAPS-MIB?

Dell-TRAPS-MIB is a Dell private MIB that defines the enterprise-specific SNMP trap/notification types a Dell switch can send to a network management station, covering a range of switch events and alarm conditions. Rather than exposing polled data tables, it standardizes the format and identity of asynchronous fault and event notifications generated by other Dell MIBs and switch subsystems. Its central monitoring role is fault detection: these traps typically cover hardware events (e.g., power supply/fan failure, temperature threshold, module insertion/removal), software/configuration events, and security or link-state changes, providing near-real-time alerting on device health rather than requiring constant polling. Because it is a notification-definition MIB, it depends on and complements the object/table definitions in other Dell private MIBs (e.g., environmental, port security, GVRP) that supply the varbinds carried in each trap. It is deployed across Dell switch fleets to feed a central NMS or SNMP trap receiver with real-time alerts on hardware faults, environmental conditions, and configuration events, and a Dell-TRAPS-MIB download lets administrators load these trap definitions into their MIB browser or NMS.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-TRAPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell network switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin would configure their SNMP trap receiver to recognize Dell-TRAPS-MIB notification OIDs so that events like a power supply failure or fan alarm on a switch generate an immediate alert rather than waiting for the next poll cycle. Correlating a received trap's varbinds against the source Dell MIB objects (e.g., an environmental or port security table entry) confirms which specific component or port triggered the notification. A burst of link-state or security-violation traps from one switch would flag a flapping port or a MAC-limit violation in near real time.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware fault/alarm notifications
  • environmental threshold traps (e.g., power/fan/temperature)
  • link/port state change traps
  • security violation traps
  • configuration change events
