Description: Manages switch stacking topology, unit roles, and stack member configuration on Dell switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Dell-STACK-MIB?

Dell-STACK-MIB is a Dell (RoweLogic 'rl' enterprise OID lineage used in Dell/Force10-class switches) MIB for managing switch stacking, covering stack unit identification, role/mode assignment, and stack topology. It exposes each stack member's active unit ID, its configured unit ID/mode to take effect after a reset, the unit's MAC address after reset, and the overall stack topology (e.g., ring or chain). Its monitoring value is around hardware/system state of the stack: rlStackCurrentUnitId and rlStackTopology reveal the live composition and arrangement of the physical stack, while the 'AfterReset' objects reveal pending configuration changes that take effect on the next reboot, useful for confirming a planned unit renumbering or mode change before it happens. As a stacking MIB it typically works alongside standard entity/chassis MIBs (ENTITY-MIB) to fully describe each physical unit in the stack. It is deployed on stackable Dell (PowerConnect/Force10-lineage) switches in wiring closets or small data centers where multiple switches are cabled together and managed as one logical unit. Engineers can download the Dell-STACK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-STACK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell stackable switches (PowerConnect/Force10-lineage)

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls rlStackActiveUnitIdTable/rlStackActiveUnitIdEntry to enumerate every physical unit currently in the stack and confirm none have unexpectedly dropped out, and checks rlStackTopology to verify the stack cabling still forms the expected ring rather than degrading to a chain, which would indicate a broken stack cable. Comparing rlStackCurrentUnitId against rlStackUnitModeAfterReset lets an operator confirm a pending unit renumbering or mode change is queued correctly before the next reload, avoiding surprises after a maintenance reboot. rlStackUnitMacAddressAfterReset helps verify that a replacement unit will retain the expected identity once the stack reloads.

What Can Be Monitored

  • stack unit membership and current unit ID
  • stack topology (ring/chain)
  • pending unit ID/mode changes after reset
  • unit MAC address after reset
