What Is DNOS-BGP-MIB?

DNOS-BGP-MIB extends standard Border Gateway Protocol management with Dell Networking Operating System (DNOS)-specific objects, part of a BGP "Flex package" for Dell/Broadcom-based DNOS routing platforms. It exposes BGP-specific configuration and state data such as peer/neighbor sessions, routing policy controls, and peering parameters beyond what the standard BGP4-MIB provides. In a monitoring context it supports fault and performance monitoring of the routing control plane, revealing BGP session/peer state (established, idle, active) which is critical to detecting route flapping or lost peering sessions. It explicitly extends the standard IETF BGP4-MIB and is meant to be used alongside it rather than as a replacement. It is deployed on Dell DNOS-based switches and routers acting as BGP speakers in data center or enterprise routing environments. Engineers can download the DNOS-BGP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DNOS-BGP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were supplied; based on the description an admin would poll DNOS BGP peer-state objects (extending the standard bgpPeerTable model) to confirm neighbor sessions remain in the Established state. A peer unexpectedly dropping to Idle or Active state would indicate a routing adjacency failure needing investigation. Because this MIB augments BGP4-MIB, monitoring typically combines both MIBs' objects for a full picture.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using agentBGPInOpens OID:

Select a Dell Networking OS (DNOS) switch/router (BGP extensions) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type agentBGPInOpens into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of BGP OPEN messages received since BGP counters were last cleared. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
