Category: Protocol: DHCP

Description: DHCPv6 server management MIB providing objects to configure IPv6 address pools, prefix delegation, and server statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DHCPv6-Server-MIB?

This is a proprietary MIB module for managing a switch's built-in DHCPv6 server functionality, covering IPv6 address pool configuration, prefix delegation, and DNS server assignment for clients. It exposes configuration data such as pool address ranges, prefix lengths, domain names, and lease lifetimes, as well as row-status controls for creating and deleting pool entries. From a monitoring standpoint it lets an administrator verify the DHCPv6 service is correctly configured and operational by checking pool boundaries, DNS server assignments, and preferred/valid lifetime values, helping catch misconfigured address ranges before they cause client address exhaustion or lease failures. It is a vendor extension layered on top of the standard DHCPv6 protocol (RFC 3315) rather than the IETF DHCPv6-SERVER-MIB, though it serves an analogous purpose. It is deployed on switches or routers acting as local DHCPv6 servers in IPv6-enabled enterprise or campus networks, where administrators can download the DHCPv6-Server-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DHCPv6-Server-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link managed switch/router with DHCPv6 server feature

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can poll swDHCPv6ServerPoolTable entries to confirm swDHCPv6ServerPoolBeginAddress and swDHCPv6ServerPoolEndAddress define the intended address range and that swDHCPv6ServerPoolAddressPrefixLen matches the subnet design. Checking swDHCPv6ServerPoolPreferredLifetime and swDHCPv6ServerPoolValidLifetime values helps verify lease timers are set appropriately to avoid premature address expiry. The swDHCPv6ServerDNSServerAddressTable can be polled to confirm clients are being handed the correct DNS servers, and swDHCPv6ServerPoolRowStatus reveals whether a pool entry is active, notInService, or failed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DHCPv6 address pool ranges
  • prefix delegation length
  • DNS server assignment to clients
  • address lease preferred/valid lifetimes
  • pool entry row status (active/inactive)
