Category: Domain: Fault Management

Description: Device Fault Management MIB providing objects for fault detection, alarm reporting, and device health state management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DFM-MIB?

DFM-MIB is Cisco's Device Fault Manager MIB, part of the CiscoWorks2000 network management suite, providing a generic fault-reporting and alarm framework for network devices managed under CiscoWorks. It exposes standardized fault notification data—event name, instance identifiers, severity, and certainty—together with server and timestamp context, and a generic notification trap for forwarding these alarms via SNMP. Its purpose is squarely fault/alarm monitoring: tracking the health state of managed devices by capturing structured alarm events (e.g., link down, hardware failure, threshold crossing) reported through the Device Fault Manager rather than exposing raw hardware counters itself. It sits on top of whatever underlying device-specific or standard MIBs generate the original condition, aggregating them into a common fault model, so it has a strong dependency on the broader CiscoWorks/DFM event pipeline. It is typically deployed within Cisco CiscoWorks2000/LMS network management stations monitoring a mixed fleet of Cisco devices. Engineers can download the DFM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DFM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco devices managed via CiscoWorks2000/LMS

Monitoring Examples

An operator watching smNotificationTrap would see smNotifEventName, smNotifSeverity, and smNotifCertainty populated for each incoming fault, letting them triage whether a reported condition (e.g. an interface down event) is confirmed and high severity. smNotifInstance and smNotifInstanceID identify exactly which managed object (a specific interface, card, or device) the fault pertains to, while smNotifTimestamp and smNotifServer show when and from which management server the alarm was raised, helping correlate faults across a large managed fleet.

What Can Be Monitored

  • fault/alarm severity
  • fault certainty
  • affected instance identification
  • event name/type
  • notification timestamp
  • originating management server
