Category: Products/Registration

Description: Provides the SMI structure and enterprise OID root for DATACOM networking equipment MIBs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DATACOM-SMI?

DATACOM-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for DATACOM networking equipment, defining the enterprise OID root and registration arcs (datacomRegistrations, datacomGenericMIBs, datacomProductsMIBs, datacomExperimental, datacomModules) under which all other DATACOM-specific MIB modules are organized. It does not itself expose runtime configuration or status data; rather it is purely a naming/registration infrastructure module that other DATACOM MIBs import to place their object identifiers in the correct part of the enterprise tree. Because it defines no scalars or tables, it cannot be used directly to monitor hardware or software status such as uptime, temperature, or interface state -- that data lives in the product-specific MIBs registered beneath it. It is foundational to every other DATACOM MIB module, all of which depend on it for their OID assignments. It is present wherever DATACOM networking equipment MIBs are compiled and loaded, serving purely as shared infrastructure rather than a standalone monitoring MIB. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DATACOM-SMI file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DATACOM-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DATACOM networking equipment (all products, via dependent MIBs)

Monitoring Examples

This module contains only OID registration arcs (datacom, datacomRegistrations, datacomGenericMIBs, datacomProductsMIBs, datacomExperimental, datacomModules) and no runtime data objects or tables, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe honestly. Its only practical use is as an import target for other DATACOM MIB modules that need a registered place in the OID tree. Actual monitorable objects are defined in those dependent product MIBs, not here.
