An admin treats a live rise in this combined SEF/AIS counter as indicating either a severe local framing problem or an upstream-relayed alarm, both serious enough to investigate immediately on a DS3 circuit. If e3t3StatsPathSEFs spikes mid-bin on a DS3 trunk, the admin checks both the local framer's sync state and any upstream alarms before concluding which of the two conditions is the actual cause.
