Since collisions typically indicate a half-duplex mismatch or shared-media contention, a rising count leads an admin to check the port's duplex/speed settings against the connected device. For example, if cmEthernetTrafficPortStatsESC is nonzero on a port expected to run full-duplex, the admin would check for an auto-negotiation mismatch with the attached equipment.
