Last Updated: 2018-07-26

Description: MIB for CIMC virtual media policy management on Cisco UCS servers, covering remote ISO/image mounting, transport protocols, authentication, and mount status for KVM-based virtual media sessions

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-CIMCVMEDIA-MIB?

CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-CIMCVMEDIA-MIB is a member of the Cisco UCS MIB family that models the Cisco Integrated Management Controller's (CIMC) virtual media feature, which lets administrators remotely mount ISO images or other media over the network to a UCS server as if it were a local CD/DVD/USB drive for KVM-based remote console operations. It exposes configuration data such as image file names/paths, mount protocol (e.g., NFS, CIFS, HTTP), device type, authentication credentials, and mount error status. Its monitoring value is largely operational/software status of the remote-media subsystem: whether a virtual media mapping is actually mounted, which image and protocol it is using, and what error type (if any) prevented a mount from succeeding — useful for diagnosing failed OS installs or firmware updates performed via mounted ISOs. Like other cucs* MIBs it depends on the shared Cisco UCS object-model conventions (Dn, Rn, instance IDs) common across the CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-* MIB family. It is used exclusively in Cisco UCS environments managed through CIMC/UCS Manager, typically during OS provisioning, firmware upgrade, or remote troubleshooting sessions. Engineers can download the CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-CIMCVMEDIA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-CIMCVMEDIA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco UCS blade servers
  • Cisco UCS rack servers
  • Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) managed servers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator troubleshooting a failed remote OS install would poll cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryTable/cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryEntry and check cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryErrorType against the expected cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryImageFileName and cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryImagePath to see why a mount failed. cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryMountProtocol and cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryDeviceType confirm whether the mapping is using the expected transport (e.g., CIFS vs. HTTP) and media type. A mismatch between the mapping name in cucsCimcvmediaActualMountEntryMappingName and what was configured would indicate a stale or misconfigured virtual media session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual media mount status/error type
  • mounted image file name and path
  • mount transport protocol (NFS/CIFS/HTTP)
  • virtual device type
  • mapping name of the vMedia session
