Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, VPN and Security

Description: Manages Cisco Threat Mitigation Service providing DDoS attack detection, rate limiting, and mitigation policy control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-THREAT-MITIGATION-SERVICE-MIB?

This Cisco MIB provides management information for the Threat Mitigation Service (TMS) 'Consumer' entity, part of Cisco's Network Infection Containment (NIC) security framework in which controllers detect threats and convey mitigation instructions to registered consumer devices. It exposes fault/security-event data (active and inactive threat counts), configuration (maximum entries for groups, threats, threat actions, and interfaces), and state information (consumer registration and controller connectivity). Its monitoring emphasis is on software/service status specific to security response: whether the local TMS consumer is properly registered and active, how many threats are currently being mitigated versus resolved, and whether configured resource limits are being approached - effectively a DDoS mitigation health indicator rather than a hardware sensor feed. It is explicitly part of the broader Cisco NIC framework involving separate controller devices, so its data is only meaningful in conjunction with that controller relationship. Typical deployment is on network devices at a data center or service-provider edge acting as TMS consumers under centralized DDoS mitigation control. Engineers can download the CISCO-THREAT-MITIGATION-SERVICE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-THREAT-MITIGATION-SERVICE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco network devices acting as Threat Mitigation Service (TMS) consumers
  • Cisco NIC (Network Infection Containment) security infrastructure

Monitoring Examples

ciTmsActiveThreats and ciTmsInActiveThreats give real-time counts of threats currently being mitigated versus resolved, while ciTmsGroupTable/ciTmsGroupEntry keyed by ciTmsGroupId lets an admin enumerate configured threat groups and ciTmsConsumerState shows whether the local TMS consumer is properly registered with its controller (identified via ciTmsControllerIpType). A ciTmsConsumerState stuck in a non-registered state combined with a climbing ciTmsActiveThreats count would indicate an active DDoS attack that isn't being fully mitigated due to a lost controller connection.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active threat count
  • inactive/resolved threat count
  • TMS consumer registration state
  • threat group configuration
  • controller connectivity/IP type
  • configured threat/interface entry limits
