Description: Manages switch fabric components including crossbar switching, backplane utilization, and fabric health monitoring.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-SWITCH-FABRIC-MIB?
This is a Cisco MIB for monitoring internal switch-fabric health on Cisco switching platforms that use a crossbar or backplane fabric architecture to interconnect line cards. It exposes a fabric utilization table covering per-link type, bandwidth, and traffic in/out counters (with peak values and peak timestamps) for each fabric link, alongside notifications for fabric-related events. Its core monitoring value is performance and hardware capacity status — tracking fabric traffic and its peak values reveals whether internal fabric bandwidth is becoming a bottleneck, a critical internal-hardware health signal distinct from external interface counters. It is Cisco-specific and typically used alongside standard IF-MIB interface statistics and Cisco chassis/environmental MIBs for a complete hardware picture. It is deployed on Cisco chassis-based switches (e.g. Catalyst/Nexus modular platforms) with crossbar switch fabrics interconnecting multiple line cards. Engineers can download the CISCO-SWITCH-FABRIC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SWITCH-FABRIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco chassis-based modular switch with crossbar switch fabric
Monitoring Examples
An administrator can poll csfFabricUtilTable/csfFabricUtilEntry, indexed by csfFabricUtilIndex, to read csfFabricUtilIn and csfFabricUtilOut traffic against csfFabricUtilBandwidth for each csfFabricUtilLinkType, and check csfFabricUtilInPeak/csfFabricUtilOutPeak with their PeakTime timestamps to see when fabric utilization last spiked. Utilization consistently approaching csfFabricUtilBandwidth on a given link would indicate the internal switching fabric is nearing saturation, a capacity problem invisible from external port counters alone.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-link fabric bandwidth utilization
- fabric input/output traffic
- peak fabric utilization and peak time
- fabric link type/description
