Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capability for the IETF IF-MIB network interface management on Cisco platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IF-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-IF-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module declaring which objects and groups of the standard IETF IF-MIB (network interface management MIB) are implemented by the SNMP agent on a given Cisco platform. It belongs to the general interface-management conformance area and, like other capability modules, defines no runtime data of its own. It therefore has no direct role in reporting hardware/software status; instead it tells a management station in advance which interface counters, states, and tables (e.g., ifOperStatus, ifSpeed) are actually supported before polling begins. It is entirely dependent on, and only meaningful in relation to, the base IF-MIB it describes. It is used during NMS integration and interface-monitoring tool setup for Cisco routers and switches. Engineers can download the CISCO-IF-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IF-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers
  • Cisco switches

Monitoring Examples

This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no runtime data objects; sample_objects is empty. It exists solely to declare IF-MIB feature support on a given Cisco platform, not to expose monitorable interface status itself.
