Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework
Description: Declares SNMP agent capability statements for the CISCO-HC-ALARM-MIB high-capacity RMON alarm implementation on Cisco platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-HC-ALARM-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-HC-ALARM-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that documents which parts of the CISCO-HC-ALARM-MIB (the high-capacity, 64-bit counter variant of the RMON alarm MIB) a particular Cisco agent implementation actually supports. It belongs to Cisco's RMON/network-monitoring MIB family and, as a capabilities module, does not itself expose any runtime data such as counters, tables, or notifications. Instead it is metadata consumed by SNMP management stations to determine implementation conformance before polling the associated data MIB. Its only dependency is the CISCO-HC-ALARM-MIB it describes, together with the standard SNMPv2 conformance framework (AGENT-CAPABILITIES). It applies wherever Cisco devices implement high-capacity RMON alarm thresholds, typically higher-end routers and switches with substantial traffic volumes needing 64-bit counters. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-HC-ALARM-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-HC-ALARM-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco routers/switches implementing high-capacity (64-bit) RMON alarms
Monitoring Examples
This module is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES statement, not a source of runtime data; it defines no monitorable objects of its own, only which groups of CISCO-HC-ALARM-MIB a given Cisco agent version implements.

RFC description
A Cisco proprietary MIB module defining agent capability statements for high capacity alarm monitoring (HC-ALARM-MIB), specifying which SNMP alarm and threshold monitoring functions are supported on Cisco systems.
Start monitoring Cisco routers/switches (high-capacity RMON alarms) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
