Description: Provides management objects for monitoring FIPS 140 cryptographic compliance statistics on Cisco security appliances and routers.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-FIPS-STATS-MIB?
CISCO-FIPS-STATS-MIB is a small Cisco vendor-specific MIB that reports the outcome of the FIPS 140 power-up self-test performed by Cisco security appliances and routers operating in FIPS-compliant mode. Its sole data object, cfipsPostStatus, is a single scalar under cfipsStatsGlobal that returns one of running, passed, failed, or notAvailable, reflecting whether the device's cryptographic module successfully completed its mandatory power-on self-test. Despite its narrow scope, this status is operationally important: a failed or stuck-running value means the device's cryptographic subsystem did not initialize correctly and the platform may not be operating in a FIPS-approved state, which can silently break IPsec/TLS session establishment on security-sensitive deployments. It depends on the underlying platform's FIPS 140 cryptographic module implementation and is only meaningful on Cisco hardware configured for FIPS mode; administrators load CISCO-FIPS-STATS-MIB into a MIB Browser to confirm cfipsPostStatus reads passed after a reboot.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FIPS-STATS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco security appliances and routers operating in FIPS 140 compliance mode
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls cfipsPostStatus immediately after a FIPS-mode device reboots; a returned value of failed instead of passed indicates the cryptographic self-test did not complete successfully and the device should not be trusted to handle FIPS-approved traffic until investigated.
What Can Be Monitored
- FIPS power-up self-test status (cfipsPostStatus)
