Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols

Description: Manages DNS client configuration on Cisco devices, including resolver settings, name server lists, and domain search order.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-DNS-CLIENT-MIB?

CISCO-DNS-CLIENT-MIB manages the DNS resolver client configuration on Cisco devices, covering enable/disable state, the list of configured name servers, and the domain search order used for name resolution. It exposes a DNS server table (cdcDNSServerTable) with address type/address/row status per configured resolver, a default domain name, and a domain-name search table, all configuration-category data. Its monitoring role is software/service-configuration status — confirming DNS resolution is enabled (cdcDNSConfigEnable) and that the expected name servers are configured and active, since a misconfigured or empty resolver list can cause name-based operations (logging, authentication, software downloads) to fail even though the device itself is otherwise healthy. It's a self-contained Cisco enterprise MIB implementing the client side of the DNS protocol, with its Notifs/Objects/Conformance structure following standard SNMPv2-SMI/CONF conventions. It's deployed across Cisco routers, switches, and other network devices wherever DNS resolution is used for management or operational functions, and administrators typically inspect these objects using a CISCO-DNS-CLIENT-MIB MIB Browser session.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-DNS-CLIENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router/switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cdcDNSConfigEnable to confirm DNS resolution is turned on and iterate cdcDNSServerTable/cdcDNSServerEntry to verify the expected cdcDNSServerAddr entries are present with an active cdcDNSServerStatus. If cdcNoOfDNSServerConfig drops to zero or a configured server address goes missing, dependent services relying on hostname resolution would begin failing even though the device's core operation is unaffected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DNS resolution enable/disable state
  • configured name server list
  • default DNS domain name
  • domain name search order
