Category: Cisco Devices, VPN and Security

Description: Manages role-based access control (RBAC) on Cisco devices, defining user roles, associated privileges, and access scope.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-COMMON-ROLES-MIB?

CISCO-COMMON-ROLES-MIB is a Cisco proprietary security/management MIB used across IOS, IOS-XE and NX-OS platforms to model role-based access control (RBAC) shared between CLI, SNMP and XML/NETCONF interfaces. It exposes configuration and inventory data: defined administrative roles, the operations/features each role may perform, which access methods support which operations, and the maximum number of roles a device supports. Rather than hardware or performance telemetry, it is primarily useful for monitoring the software/security configuration state of a device — auditing which roles exist, catching unauthorized role additions, and verifying role capacity has not been exceeded. It depends closely on SNMP VACM (View-based Access Control Model), since SNMPv1/v2c communities and SNMPv3 users must map into a VACM group to gain the access a role grants. It is typically deployed on enterprise and service-provider Cisco routers and switches that need granular separation of administrative privileges. Engineers can download the CISCO-COMMON-ROLES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-COMMON-ROLES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE routers and switches
  • Cisco NX-OS devices supporting RBAC

Monitoring Examples

commonRoleTable/commonRoleEntry lists each defined role, while commonRoleFeatureTable/commonRoleFeatureEntry (keyed by commonRoleFeatureIndex) shows which operations (commonRoleFeatureOperation) each role can perform. commonRoleSupportedOperTable ties a given commonRoleAccessMethod (CLI/SNMP/XML) to its supported operations, and an admin polling commonRoleMaxRoles alongside commonRoleTable can confirm role capacity isn't exceeded or that no unexpected new role was created.

What Can Be Monitored

  • defined user roles
  • role feature/operation permissions
  • supported access methods (CLI/SNMP/XML)
  • maximum role capacity
  • role-to-operation mappings
