Organization: Cisco Systems Inc.

Last Updated: 2008-06-13

Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management

Description: Provides a common set of management objects for Cisco devices, covering generic device status, notifications, and administrative controls.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-COMMON-MGMT-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific MIB from Cisco providing a shared framework of management objects that unify device access and user administration across different management interfaces (SNMP, CLI, XML, etc.) on a Cisco device. It exposes a common user table with account names, passwords, expiry dates, SSH key configuration, and per-protocol authentication settings, along with global controls such as enforcing privacy on SNMP users. Its monitoring relevance is chiefly software/configuration status rather than physical hardware: administrators track ccmCommonUserTable entries to audit which local accounts exist, whether SSH keys or SNMP auth protocols are configured, and watch ccmCommonUserLastChange to detect unexpected account modifications, which is important for security auditing and change detection. It explicitly serves as an integration/framework MIB meant to be referenced by other Cisco management MIBs handling specific access methods. It is deployed across the general population of Cisco networking devices (routers, switches) wherever centralized local-user management visibility is needed, and a CISCO-COMMON-MGMT-MIB MIB Browser is often used to audit these user objects directly.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-COMMON-MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches (general platform-wide management framework)

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls ccmCommonUserTable/ccmCommonUserEntry, keyed by ccmCommonUserName, to check ccmCommonUserExpiryDate and ccmCommonUserSshKeyConfigured, confirming that an account due to expire has been renewed or disabled as expected. ccmCommonUserSNMPAuthProtocol reveals which authentication protocol a given SNMP user account is configured to use, letting an auditor spot an account still using a weaker protocol. ccmCommonUserLastChange and ccmCommonUsersGlobalEnforcePriv are watched together to detect unauthorized changes to the user database or a relaxation of the global privacy-enforcement policy, while ccmCommonMaxUsers/ccmCommonUsers show how close the device is to its configured account limit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • local user account inventory
  • account expiry dates
  • SSH key configuration status
  • SNMP user authentication protocol
  • user database last-change timestamp
  • global SNMP privacy enforcement setting

RFC description

Framework for integrating management of different device access methods (SNMP, CLI, XML) by providing a common user authentication and access control mechanism across multiple management interfaces.

Start monitoring Cisco routers and switches (common management framework) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
